Former Knights player and coach named final inductee of 2014

(April 4 – Fort McMurray, AB) The Wood Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame Society (WBSHOF) is pleased to announce rugby player/coach Andy Lloyd as the third inductee into the Class of 2014.

Born in Wales, UK, with rugby in his blood, Lloyd arrived in Fort McMurray in 1978 as a 19-year old. Two years later, he joined the Fort McMurray Knights Rugby Club, embarking on what would be a 32-year journey with the organization.

Lloyd played 17 seasons with the Knights as a winger, centre and in the forwards. During that time the team won multiple titles including four Edmonton Rugby Union (ERU) Division II championships (’80 ’82, ’85 and ’86) and two Alberta Division II championships (’82 and ’86). In 1994, Lloyd began coaching the Knights as well as playing, before eventually switching solely to coaching. Lloyd led the Knights to an ERU Division III championship in 1996 and was subsequently named Alberta Rugby Union Coach of the Year.

“I was back in the UK when I heard I was going to be inducted,” said Lloyd. “I couldn’t get back to sleep after that. I am really excited; it is a great end to my time in Fort McMurray. I always just wanted to give back to the sport I played and loved, and to my community.

Lloyd, who will be inducted as a Builder, was always committed to helping develop and grow rugby. He volunteered to host local high school rugby clinics and was selected to coach the Zone 7 Under-18 Rugby Team at the Alberta Summer Games in 2000 and 2010. He retired from coaching the Fort McMurray Knights following the 2012 season.

This year's Induction Dinner will honour Lloyd, Oil Barons founder Ches Dicks and long-distance runner Bill Nielson for their outstanding contributions to sport in the Wood Buffalo region. The 2014 Induction Dinner takes place June 12 at the Sawridge Inn and Conference Centre.  Tickets are on sale for $100 each or $800 for a table of eight. They can be purchased at the Keyano Box Office or by calling 780-381-1213. Sponsorship opportunities are also still available.

The Wood Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame is located inside the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre at Keyano College in Fort McMurray, Alberta.
