Passion and philanthropy leads local family to Hall of Fame
(April 29, 2013 – Fort McMurray, AB) The Wood Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame Society is proud to announce the Ewashko Family as the fourth and final inductee into the Class of 2013.
Pick any sport in Fort McMurray, and one way or another, the Ewashko Family has likely contributed to its growth and success. After creating Northland Forest Products Ltd. in 1970, Bev and her late husband Roy were instrumental in the establishment and advancement of local sports through sponsorship, organization, coaching, volunteering and officiating.
Bev played a major role in the construction of the Centennial Pool and eventual creation of the Fort McMurray Swim Club, then known as the “Water Beatles”, of which she served as president for nine years. Both were also on the original board of directors for the Fort McMurray YMCA, provided resources and monetary donations during the formative stages of the Fort McMurray Golf Club and were involved with the 1985 Alberta Summer Games and 1992 Alberta Winter Games.
“Our participation in these wonderful organizations have given back to us as much or more than we have given and our satisfaction is knowing we have contributed to the development of a community we love and continue to call home,” said Bev.
Bev and Roy’s three children Howie, Kim and Craig are now carrying on their parent’s legacy of passion and philanthropy. Accomplished athletes themselves, Howie and Craig, now co-owners of the family business, have made multiple monetary and material donations to Fort McMurray athletics, including $200,000 towards the construction of the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre at Keyano College.
“To say that I am proud of my children and their families would be a huge understatement. If Roy were still with us, I know he would echo my feelings. While we were the instigators of some of the sports in the community, it is with great pride that we see our children carrying on that legacy,” added Bev.
The Ewashko Family, whose local ties to hockey, volleyball, basketball, dance and figure skating span three generations over 40 years, will be inducted into the Wood Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame in the Builder category.
This year’s inductees will be honoured at the Wood Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame’s 7th Induction Dinner on June 13 at the Sawridge Inn and Conference Centre. Tickets are on sale for $100 each or $800 for a table of eight and are available at RE/MAX, MNP, the Keyano Theatre Box Office or by calling 780-381-1213.
