Gerry Breneman moved to Fort McMurray in 1973 and for 32 years coached numerous champions in high school cross country running resulting in 15 zone, four provincial and four silver team championships along with 11 individual provincial champions.

“Winning the provincial championships with cross-country running was the most intense thing for me and the most exciting,” said Breneman. “It was intense, itwas nerve racking because you’re standing on the sidelines and watching everyone else perform and there were a lot of great kids and a lot of great performances.”

Breneman was also instrumental in the development and grooming of the Birchwood Trails system and is a former president of the Ptarmigan Nordic Ski Club.

He also assisted in the bids for Fort McMurray to host the 1985 Alberta Summer Games, 1992 Alberta Winter Games and 2004 Arctic Winter Games and several zone championships.

Breneman, an elite athlete himself, competed in cross-country skiing, long distance running and kayaking. He was named Fort McMurray Athlete of the Year in 1978.

Of his induction Breneman said, “I did spend 32 years in Fort McMurray and it was a really good experience. My involvement in sports and athletics greatly added to my quality of life so getting any kind of an award for doing what I really enjoyed is icing on the cake”.
