A lifelong Toronto Maple Leafs fan, Meagher was an all-around athlete attending school in Nackawic.

Meagher ran his first-ever Road Race in 1979 placing third. That same year he was awarded an athletic scholarship to attend the University of New Brunswick (UNB). He was selected 1983 UNB Runner of the Year with the Dr. R. J. Love Award.

It was also during his college years that Meagher competed in his first marathon, placing second at the 1981 New Brunswick Heart Marathon. He would win the event in 1982.

Meagher’s humanitarian side was evident at an early age. In 1979, in order to raise funds and awareness for Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, he crawled – a than Guinness Book of World Records distance – 14.6 miles from Mactaquac to the university campus.

In 1983 he moved north to Fort McMurray to take on the role of physical education teacher at Fort McMurray Composite High School.

He brought a new enthusiasm to Miners’ pride and in 1984 was one of the founding fathers of Challenge Cup.

At the inaugural Oilsands Marathon (1990) Meagher crossed the finish line first. He duplicated the feat 14 more times!

The year 1991 was highlighted by a second place finish at the Canadian Marathon Championships.

Meagher also won his age group for the 1997 Canadian Masters 10-k.

His marathon time of 2:32.03 was the fastest in Alberta in 1999… His personal best in the marathon 2:25:32 was established in 1992.

In total Meagher has won 46 marathon events, including the Jozef Frank Merciless Marathon 17 times and the Red Deer Marathon seven times.

He was also part of the Tarsand Turkeys which won the mixed division seven years-in-a-row at Banff to Jasper relay race.

Meagher has also worked as an on-ice official in the Alberta Junior Hockey League for 19 years.

Selected as an ambassador for the 2005 World Masters Games held in Edmonton, Meagher has been a community leader both off and on the field of athletics and is rightfully proud in the statement. “I have never not finished a running race.”
