Jennifer Button started with the Fort McMurray Manta Swim Club at the age of five in 1982. At age 10 she was the top-ranked female in Alberta in the 100 metre and 200 m butterfly. Aged 12 she relocated to Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario and seven years later qualified for the Canadian National Swim Team.
She also swam for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues and was a perennial champion within the Canadian Interuniversity Sport.
Highlights from her eight years with the national program included: silver medal, 200 metre butterfly, 1999 Pan-Am Games, Winnipeg Canada; bronze medal, 200 m butterfly and 4 x 100 m freestyle, 2002 Commonwealth Games, Manchester England; bronze medal, 4 x 4 100 m medley, 2002 Pan Pacific Games in Yokohama, Japan .
In 1999 Button became the first Canadian woman to swim the 100 m butterfly less than one minute and held the national record for both the 100 m and 200 m butterfly for several years.
At the 2000 Olympic Summer Games held in Sydney, Australia, Button finished 17th, 200 m butterfly and 20th, 100 m butterfly. She was also part of the fifth place 4 x 200 m freestyle and sixth place 4 x 100 m medley.
