Community champion to enter Hall of Fame

(April 23, 2013 – Fort McMurray, AB) The Wood Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame Society is proud to announce John Wilson as the third inductee into the Class of 2013.

A business leader and philanthropist, Wilson has supported the development of sport and recreation in our region for more than 30 years and will be inducted in the Builder category.

Wilson arrived in Fort McMurray in 1977 with his father Howard to establish H. Wilson Industries Ltd., a heavy equipment business that specializes in paving, road building, and sewer and water services.

His involvement in the local sporting scene includes serving on the Fort McMurray Oil Barons board of directors during their fledgling years in the Alberta Junior Hockey League, co-chairing the 2004 Arctic Winter Games in Wood Buffalo and chairing the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre (SSWC) campaign.

Of Wilson’s long list of contributions to sport, one of the most significant is his association with the continued growth of the Vista Ridge All Seasons Park located in Saprae Creek.

Formerly known as Vista Ridge Ski Hill, the facility opened in 1995. Thanks to Wilson’s vision and resources, the area has expanded to 60 skiable acres consisting of eight trails, a beginners area and terrain and tube parks. It is now commonly known as, "The best non-mountain winter recreation in Alberta”.

“The community has been good to me and I believe that every business needs to give back in what it takes away," said Wilson. "The more we can do to make Fort McMurray a better place to live, the more we can attract people to stay in our community."

Wilson will join Benjamin Sauve, Laurie Wiltshire and an additional inductee, to be announced next week, at the Wood Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame’s 7th Induction Dinner on June 13 at the Sawridge Inn and Conference Centre. Tickets are on sale for $100 each or $800 for a table of eight and are available at RE/MAX, MNP, the Keyano Theatre Box Office or by calling 780-381-1213.
